Saturday Tying Demo – Jake Ruthven

Feb 20, 2016      10AM to Noon

Jake’s Bio keeps changing.  He’s now a college student, and has racked up numerous flyfishing and tying accomplishments, from big time tying demos to magazine coverage.   Seems not that long ago he was just a talented kid promoting a high school flyfishing club!

This Saturday is a perfect time to see how Jake has expanded his tying talents.

Elkhorn hosts a guest tyer each Saturday at 10AM all winter, starting in September and through April and beyond.  It’s free, and all are welcome.  Drop by for coffee and fly tying and fishing talk!

Rod Building Instruction – Winter 2016

Done-Seats_640We hope you enjoyed Jim Cooper’s presentation last Saturday, along with Brian Chavet, describing the process of rod building and introducing our opportunities this Winter.

To recap, at Elkhorn we are committed to small class sizes so you receive the full benefit of our knowledgeable instructors.  Classes are scheduled for small groups at times convenient for you. Tools and equipment are available for your use, such as rod wrapping stations and the rod turner for applying the epoxy finish.

The class begins with a session in which you fit a grip and reel seat, and assemble the butt section.  Next, you learn how to align your rod sections with the spine, mark your rod guide spacing, and make thread wraps to secure the guides.  Last, you will mix the epoxy and coat your thread wraps.

The fee for our small-group rod building class is $75, of which $25 can be applied as a credit towards the purchase of any Elkhorn rod blanks or components.  We have blanks available for most of our product line, and can certainly provide a suitable blank for any length and line weight.

If you would like to build a rod, fill out and send the form below with your contact information, and we will answer any questions you have and help schedule you for instruction.

“Norm’s Secret Bugger”

There was no tyer on the calendar for this Saturday, but Brian figured if I got anything for Christmas is would probably be fly tying materials, so why not turn me loose on Saturday.  Not sure what to tie with coal, but I’m thinking on it.

There is a definite satisfaction when you catch a fish on a fly you tied, and the pleasure is magnified when it’s a pattern you designed, or tweaked to make it uniquely yours.

It’s been my pleasure over the seasons at Elkhorn to have experienced another rewarding aspect – showing someone a pattern, or better yet how to tie it, or when/where/how to fish it, and it turns into a hot fly for them.  It’s fun to share a good fly and be a genius, even if only for a moment!

On the other hand, there are some Evil Geniuses who come up with a hot, hot fly and keep it under lock and key, not sharing the flies or the tying pattern.  You know who you are, Norm.

Most of the patterns I will demonstrate have such a story behind them.  Click here to download the recipe sheet.

Norm's Secret Bugger

Saturdays featured fly will be “Norm’s Secret Bugger”, based on a sample acquired through industrial espionage and reverse-engineered in a forensics laboratory.  It will be a “Vise Squad! Sixpack” soon!

This week we get Eric Philp on the other side of the camera!

Eric has extensive experience fishing the Poudre and other Northern Colorado rivers and streams, and one of his favorite destinations is the Bighorn River in Montana.  His tying program for Saturday is an application of that experience to the vise, with rock-solid pattern choices for these waters.

Here’s a sneak peek at his pattern recipes:  Philp Fly Tying Demo 12-19-15

Saturday Tying Demo – Matt Winkler – 12/12/15

Matt provided some professional references:

Matt Winkler fishes 12 months a year, and is reputed to come home only to do laundry and earn some gas money.   This session Matt intends to tie stillwater patterns, and a couple of carp flies, and a streamer or two.  You may recognize his “Snot Rocket” pattern carried by Umpqua.

Join us this Saturday to see his tying demo, and help us get him talking.   With the breadth of his fishing experience, he’s likely to accidentally spill some secrets. . . . .

You can download a copy of Matt’s tying recipes here: Winkler Demo – Winter 2015

Saturday Tying Demo 12/5/15 – Chuck Esch

This Saturday at Elkhorn Flyshop Chuck Esch will be our demonstration tyer, and plans on featuring his best winter patterns – midges, baetis, mysis, and sowbugs.

Chuck has an abundance of enthusiasm for tying, and if you have ever peeked at his flybox at one of our Vise Squad! sessions you would see rows and rows of identical flies, all perfectly tied and uniform proportions.  His talents have been discovered – he’s been a popular tyer at area TU tying expos, shop demos at Elkhorn and other flyshops, and this season you can visit with him at the Denver Flyfishing Show!

Join us on Saturday!

Tying Demo – Jim Rose – 11/28/15

Our Saturday Posse meets this weekend in our continuing quest for perfect flies and big fish.

Our Tying Demo this Saturday features Jim Rose.   Jim has extensive experience in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming, and his patterns have accounted for some impressive fish.

You may remember the mystery last year regarding “Bob’s Average Nymph” -you can review last years post.  We have been getting great turnouts for our Saturday Tying Demo program, and after looking at pictures like the one here, I think we should use our superior numbers to hold Jim down until he volunteers his secrets.

We were prepared to threaten him last year, but it turns out he’s a really friendly guy eager to share what he has learned.  We can only hope he offers some resistance this year . . . .
