Saturday Tying Demo – Eric Philp – 1/6/18

“Tasty Snacks are Critical to Flyfishing Success.”

Full Service!  Eric submitted two recipe lists.  The first (Tasty Snacks I) is for the patterns he will tie on Saturday, including midges, mayflies and leeches, and another menu (Tasty Snacks II) for his daughter’s newly expanded “MeOhMy Coffee and Pie”, 3310 W. County Rd. 54G, LaPorte, CO.  So this spring and summer when you are heading up to fish the Poudre or North Park with Eric’s patterns, you can start your day with a stop for coffee and pie, and maybe even a lunch sandwich to go, before throwing tasty snacks at the fish!

We are glad to get Eric on the other side of the video camcorder.  He’s been fishing the northern Front Range for many years, and his experience will be reflected in the patterns he demonstrates.

Elkhorn Saturday Tying Demo – Matt Winkler 12/16/17

Matt is usually fishing, so we are lucky to catch him at home for a Saturday.  Each year he sends new images of bigger and bigger fish.  What better endorsement of his tying and fishing experience could you want!

You can download a copy of Matt’s tying recipes for this Saturday here: Winkler Recipes for 12/16/17

Click here to review Matt’s bio and recipes from last season.  And images of last years big fish.

With Matt, not everything is trout.  If it’s massive, he’ll be chasing it with a flyrod.

Flycasting Class for Intermediate Flycasters

Flycasting Class for Intermediate Flycasters

Instruction by:  Jim Tilmant, FFF Certified Casting Instructor

This 2 hour class is designed to extend the skills of flyfishers who have a handle on the basics, but want to take their flycasting to a new level.

Focus will be on increasing loop control, increasing distance, overcoming wind problems, and improving ability to get good drifts with your fly.  Students will learn how to improve their overhead casts, shoot line effectively, and will be introduced to hauling for more line speed and distance.  Specialty casts and aerial mends, to avoid fly drag and help adjust to various casting and stream conditions, will be discussed and practiced.    (This class will be on grass and will not involve time on the water)

Skill Level:     Ability to make simple straight line casts of up to 40 ft, ability to repeatedly false cast 30 or more feet of line while maintaining control.

Class Size Cost Class Dates
Limited to 6 Students $40.00 / person Saturday, October 7, 2017 10AM

The class appears to have filled, and you are on a waiting list. We will contact you if there are openings, or to notify you of future classes on this topic.

Saturday Tying Demo 4/29/17 Rob Stout

Rob Stout is our guest fly tyer this Saturday.  He suffers from a number of ailments – carpoholic, streamer junkie, and a serious fly tying addiction.

This Saturday we may see anything from his carp crawfish to big articulated trout streamer.  He’s a contributor to the Pyramid Fly Company, and we won’t want to miss a chance to interrogate him on flyfishing Pyramid Lake for ten pound cutthroat!  I suspect we can get him to demonstrate some Balanced Leeches.

You can find Rob’s tying videos online on his “Fishing Northern Colorado” You Tube channel.  He’s a field editor/blogger for Fish Explorer.  His patterns have been featured in tying magazines.  With Rob’s passion for fishing, you’ll be seeing a lot of him over the coming years!

Rob is our last scheduled tyer for the season, but we are working on extending our popular tying demos for another several weeks, so keep checking the Emails!

Saturday Tying Demo – Bennie Mosher – 4/15/17

This Saturday Bennie Mosher will by dyeing Easter Eggs.  Wait – TYING eggs.  Actually, he’ll be tying his favorite fly patterns. Yeah, that sounds better.

He’ll claim to be a relative newcomer to fly tying, but he’s in the accelerated program, rapidly accumulating expertise as he explores materials and techniques.  (He stepped up to the plate as a volunteer at our Potluck tying demo, so I tell him he’s now a veteran celebrity tyer!)

Click here for a downloadable recipe list.

Bennie will be tying a range of fly patterns, including some famous and popular, and a few of his design.

You can download and print a recipe sheet here.

Bennie Mosher is our guest this Saturday,

Saturday Demo – 4/18/17 Steve Solano

Poor Steve.  His job requires him to drive a lot of miles in the Rocky Mountain Region, often in remote parts of Wyoming that are close to rivers and lakes.

His son Joey is a guide and shop rat at North Park Anglers, so Steve has a network of informants to supplement his knowledge of fishing around here.

His theme on Saturday will be stillwater patterns.  Click here for a preview of his recipes.

Saturday Demo 1/28/17 – Casey Prather

Fly-Tying-Feet

This week our guest tyer is Casey Prather.  Many of you have met him at Jax, or attended his presentation here at Elkhorn on the Rocky Mountain Angling Club, or came to his tying demo in ’15.  His fishing resume is wild – from saltwater gamefish to big trout, and warmwater species.

So you can guess – his tying program is also likely to include a wide variety of patterns.  He’s an enthusiastic flyfisher, flytyer and storyteller, so you’ll be sure to enjoy his program.

Elkhorn Saturday Tying Demo – 10-22-16

Featured Tyer – Steve “Drunk and Disorderly” Rogers

Gonga by Steve Rogers

      Gonga by Steve

Come by Saturday to our Tying Demo to see if that description is Steve’s alias, or just a nickname.

This Saturday, his theme will be “Tying Meat”, and since he is incapable of keeping a secret, this will be a fantastic opportunity to interrogate him on where, when and how to fish big streamers.

If you attended last year’s demo by Steve,  or if you have been to a Vise Squad! event, you know that Steve and his henchmen Jon, Chuck and Keegan are the ones covered in marabou and rabbit by night’s end after another big streamer session.

Steve is always looking for hot new designs, and not just streamers – he is our source for some deadly caddis dries and sowbug imitations.

Join us Saturday, and make sure to let me introduce you to Elkhorn’s new owners Jim and Dan McGann.  (Dan’s fishing log covers an incredible array of Colorado waters.  He doesn’t know it yet, but he’s due for our Elkhorn Arm Twist to see if he’s any better at keeping secrets than Steve!)
