A “Hopper and a Dropper” is a standard rig around here all summer, but what about stillwaters? or fast water?
This Saturday Mark Mills will introduce us to some dynamic duos, patterns that are good enough on their own but exhibit enhanced super powers when paired together.
We are thankful that Mark has completed all his probation and community service. For those of you who aren’t familiar with his troubles, here’s his rap sheet:
“Tying Flies with Commonly Available Sheet Foam and Cylinders”
This Saturday Steve Schweitzer will be our guest tyer. Steve doesn’t just tie patterns – his demonstrations focus on particular materials or techniques, and will open your eyes to new possibilities in tying.
This session he’s focusing on the use of foam to tie poppers, gurglers and frogs. Make some room in your flyboxes, because you’ll want to add Saturdays patterns, and will probably be inspired to design even more!
Elkhorn hosts a guest tyer each Saturday at 10AM all winter, starting in September and through April and beyond. It’s free, and all are welcome. Drop by for coffee and fly tying and fishing talk!
This week our guest tyer is Casey Prather. Many of you have met him at Jax, or attended his presentation here at Elkhorn on the Rocky Mountain Angling Club, or came to his tying demo in ’15. His fishing resume is wild – from saltwater gamefish to big trout, and warmwater species.
So you can guess – his tying program is also likely to include a wide variety of patterns. He’s an enthusiastic flyfisher, flytyer and storyteller, so you’ll be sure to enjoy his program.

Steve’s programs are unique – not just a tying demo, but instead he delves into what, where, when, and best of all, why.

Elkhorn Saturday Tying Demo presents – Matt Winkler
Matt Winkler fishes 12 months a year, and is reputed to come home only to do laundry and earn some gas money.
There aren’t many places within 10 hours of here that Matt hasn’t fished, and probably hooked a big ‘un. As you can see from the images, his expertise is not limited to trout.
Join us this Saturday to see his tying demo, and help us get him talking. With the breadth of his fishing experience, he’s likely to accidentally spill some secrets. . . . .

We got lucky. I was worried that our Wisconsin transplant John Pollock might cancel his tying demo this Saturday, but luckily the Packers playoff game isn’t until Sunday.
(I almost forgot – wear your Dallas Cowboy apparel to the tying demo for an extra .50% off your fly tying purchases during the intermission.)
The first time John tied for us we had him demonstrate some of his trout patterns from home, but we learned that in these few short years he has adopted the small tailwater flies, spending time fishing the South Platte, Yampa, and other waters throughout the state.
Elkhorn Flyshop presents a fly tying demonstration each Saturday at 10AM, from September through at least April, featuring some of the most talented and notable tyers in Northern Colorado. It’s free! Join us for fresh coffee, a donut or cookie, and some amazing demonstration tying.
Jim is a northern Colorado/southern Wyoming veteran with a world of experience fishing these waters. You may remember his previous demo featuring “Bob’s Average Nymph”, one of my top five favorite fly names. This season he will be tying distinguished flies from his history figuring out the North Platte:
“These flies include several of my old favorites from decades of fishing the upper North Platte in Wyoming and a couple of excellent, lesser known patterns for Front Range streams. The old favorites are my variations on some classic patterns that don’t get used much today. I threw the rainbow smelt in for fun. It’s a great fly for really big brook trout in the Nipigon River, where the world record brook trout was caught.”
