Tying Demo Coffee Line

Saturday Demo 9/23/17 Tony McColl

Find your coffee mug and get it scoured clean – our Saturday Tying Demo is back!

Kicking off our 2017-2018 Saturday Tying Demonstration program is Tony McColl.

Tony puts his flies to work up and down the front range.  They are designed to catch fish, and so his ties are a practical mix of creativity and solid proportions and design.

Check out the impressive list of tyers for the remainder of the season.

Elkhorn hosts a guest tyer each Saturday at 10AM all winter, starting in September and through April and beyond.  It’s free, and all are welcome.  Drop by for coffee and fly tying and fishing talk!

Featured Flies – Bass Poppers

Like most of us my default setting is “trout on the brain”, and I can simply forget other flyfishing options in the summertime.  Bass on surface poppers is one I never forget – it’s a blast sitting in a float tube on a local pond and waiting for a bucketmouth to inhale a big fly!

We’ve got hard foam bass poppers in the shop in several sizes.  The 5wt Traveler or Nomad will easily handle the medium and small size poppers, and even do a credible job with the larger poppers.  You can reach a bit farther with a 6 or 7wt, and the stronger butt section in the Amp series helps set the hook and lift the bass from weedy bottoms.

Be sure to use a short (4ft) and stout (0X) leader, and  use the non-slip open loop knot to give the popper freedom to move about.

In addition to larger impoundments like Lonetree and Boyd, the front range is well-populated with reclaimed gravel pits that produce sizeable and numerous bass.  Try River’s Edge in Loveland, or Pella Crossing in Hygiene.  St. Vrain Ponds in Longmont are another good option.

I especially like taking them out at sunup or sundown, when the air is cooler and the bass are looking up.  Throw it near rocks or weeds and let it sit until the ripple settles, then chug it once or twice, hard, so it throws some water and goes “plunk”,  and then let it sit.  Sometimes you get a big slashing take, but often they just suck in under, so pay attention!

Saturday Tying Demo – Rod Dufour

Just when you thought it was over!  We are extending our tying demo season a few weeks.

Come on by this Saturday for Rod Dufour.  Rod is from Longmont, and will be tying his favorites for this area.

On the following Saturday Marty will be finishing up the season with our final demo of the year.  If you follow Vise Squad!, tying demos and the online videos, you’ve seen him tie over a hundred different patterns, so for this session he’s asking for requests – send an Email to Marty@Elkhornflyrodandreel.com and let him know what you’d like to see him tie!

Saturday Tying Demo 4/29/17 Rob Stout

Rob Stout is our guest fly tyer this Saturday.  He suffers from a number of ailments – carpoholic, streamer junkie, and a serious fly tying addiction.

This Saturday we may see anything from his carp crawfish to big articulated trout streamer.  He’s a contributor to the Pyramid Fly Company, and we won’t want to miss a chance to interrogate him on flyfishing Pyramid Lake for ten pound cutthroat!  I suspect we can get him to demonstrate some Balanced Leeches.

You can find Rob’s tying videos online on his “Fishing Northern Colorado” You Tube channel.  He’s a field editor/blogger for Fish Explorer.  His patterns have been featured in tying magazines.  With Rob’s passion for fishing, you’ll be seeing a lot of him over the coming years!

Rob is our last scheduled tyer for the season, but we are working on extending our popular tying demos for another several weeks, so keep checking the Emails!

Saturday Tying Demo – Bennie Mosher – 4/15/17

This Saturday Bennie Mosher will by dyeing Easter Eggs.  Wait – TYING eggs.  Actually, he’ll be tying his favorite fly patterns. Yeah, that sounds better.

He’ll claim to be a relative newcomer to fly tying, but he’s in the accelerated program, rapidly accumulating expertise as he explores materials and techniques.  (He stepped up to the plate as a volunteer at our Potluck tying demo, so I tell him he’s now a veteran celebrity tyer!)

Bennie will be tying a range of fly patterns, including some famous and popular, and a few of his design.

You can download and print a recipe sheet here.

Saturday Demo – Dick Shinton – 4/8/17

Shinton in his office

Dick Shinton in his office

Don’t be nervous this week – there will be no more drafting of volunteers from the audience until further notice!

Many thanks to Jim, Benny, Norm, and the duo of Jerry and Kent, for stepping forward to demonstrate their patterns last week.  It made for a fun Saturday demo, I’m told the video has made the first cut at America’s Funniest Videos.

No offense to our volunteers, but we went back to a professional for this Saturday’s event.  Dick Shinton will be our guest, and we will want the benefit of the full two hours from this outstanding tyer and designer of flies.

Dick guides extensively in Rocky Mountain National Park, and knows the hatches and rythms of that fishery like nobody else.  He has gladly shared these patterns with us at past demos, here at Elkhorn and at big shows like tying expos by the St. Vrain TU, Rocky Mountain Flycasters TU, and West Denver TU.  If you know half of what Dick does behind the scenes for flyfishing (St. Vrain TU; kids programs; fundraising) you share my admiration for this generous talent.

This season Dick is going a little different direction – back to the future!  He’s tying some old, venerable patterns, including bucktail streamers and soft hackles.

Although they are traditional patterns, they should be a part of your future because they work, and are a load of fun to tie and fish!   Time to learn the wet-fly swing.

Saturday Tying Demo – 4/1/17 – Pot Luck Demo

This Saturday is a Pot Luck Demo – you have been invited to bring your favorite pattern and sit behind the vise for a few minutes and show us how you do it!

(The date is probably a coincidence.)

Once again we are having an “open vise” session at our Saturday Demo.

Let’s have some fun!  Bring a sample pattern, a hook or two, and a bag of the materials you need.  We will have a Peak vise, lamp, and an array of tools so you don’t need to bring much.

I have a few volunteers lined up, but need more, so please bring stuff and let me know when you arrive that you are prepared to tie.  Last year we had some good patterns, and certainly a good time.

Here’s the deal.  If we get enough volunteers to cover the first hour, we’ll move on to the “Tag Team” event.

First, I’ll conscript two tyers to tie a wooly bugger as a team, using only one hand from each tyer.

If that is successfully completed, I pledge to demonstrate my “Blindfolded Clouser”. I’ve already packed the necessary materials.

Saturday Demo – 3/25/17 – Phil Iwane

Phil Iwane

Phil is an outstanding tyer of the smaller sizes so important to us on the tailwaters of the front range.  Join us Saturday when he demonstrates his “No Mercy”  midge, and shows us how to get that extended body that turns your Blue Winged Olive dry into a fish magnet.

This year he has a bonus for us – he will demonstrate a useful dropper rig for nymphs in both rivers and stillwaters.

Saturday Demo – 4/18/17 Steve Solano

Poor Steve.  His job requires him to drive a lot of miles in the Rocky Mountain Region, often in remote parts of Wyoming that are close to rivers and lakes.

His son Joey is a guide and shop rat at North Park Anglers, so Steve has a network of informants to supplement his knowledge of fishing around here.

His theme on Saturday will be stillwater patterns.  Click here for a preview of his recipes.
