Skill Level:     Ability to make simple straight line casts of up to 40 ft, ability to repeatedly false cast 30 or more feet of line while maintaining control.

Bugs! Aquatic Entomology Class

Aquatic Entomology Class with Chris Kotalik

October 4, 2015   10:00AM

Want a hands-on interactive lesson on the aquatic insects that your beloved trout eat? Join Chris Kotalik, a graduate research student in the Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology Department at CSU for a lesson on the aquatic insects living in our mountain streams and rivers. Chris works in the field of aquatic ecotoxicology, where he uses aquatic insects to determine water quality in streams. He has taught stream ecology at the Pingree Park Mountain Campus, worked for the City of Fort Collins teaching watershed education, and has heaps of experience working with aquatic insects!

The 3 to 4 hour class will be conducted up the Big Thompson Canyon where we will sample, identify, and prepare a collection of aquatic insects for you to keep. The best way to learn about these bugs is to be in the river actively collecting and identifying. Participants will receive sample vials with ethanol, forceps, tray, two bug boxes and taxonomic key. So bring your waders and prepare to improve your knowledge of aquatic insects, and your ability to catch more trout!
